Is pet insurance worth it? Here’s what every pet owner should know

Caleb Meriwether, Haven Insurance Partners, visits with Dan Reaves, host of ‘The Dan Reaves Show,’ today, and each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., to discuss all things insurance.

Pets are more than just animals—they’re family. From the joy they bring to the companionship they provide, it’s no surprise that more pet owners are seeking ways to protect their furry friends. One increasingly popular option is pet insurance. But what exactly does it cover, and is it worth the investment?

What Is Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance is a health policy for your dog, cat, or other companion animals. Like human health insurance, it helps cover unexpected veterinary costs due to accidents, illnesses, or even routine care—depending on the plan.

Most pet insurance policies are reimbursement-based, meaning you pay the vet bill upfront, then file a claim to get a percentage of it reimbursed. Common coverage categories include:

  • Accident & Illness Plans – Cover injuries, surgeries, hospitalizations, diagnostic tests, and illnesses like cancer or diabetes.
  • Accident-Only Plans – Cheaper plans covering emergencies like broken bones, swallowed objects, or bite wounds.
  • Wellness or Preventive Add-Ons – Help pay for vaccines, dental cleanings, flea/tick prevention, and annual exams.

What’s Not Covered?

Pet insurance usually excludes pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures, breeding-related costs, and some hereditary conditions (unless included by specific policies). Always read the fine print and ask about waiting periods, exclusions, and coverage caps.

Why Pet Insurance Matters

Veterinary care can be shockingly expensive. Emergency surgery may cost several thousand dollars. Long-term treatments like chemotherapy or chronic disease management can create a financial strain—especially when decisions are being made in the middle of a crisis.

Pet insurance offers peace of mind, letting you focus on care rather than cost. It can also allow access to better treatments that might otherwise be unaffordable.

Things to Consider

When shopping for a pet insurance policy, consider the following:

  • Monthly Premiums – Vary based on pet’s age, breed, and location.
  • Reimbursement Rate – Usually 70% to 90%.
  • Annual Limits – Some plans have no caps; others have annual, per-incident, or lifetime limits.
  • Deductibles – Choose between per-incident or annual deductibles based on your risk tolerance and budget.

Is It Right for You?

Pet insurance may not be necessary for everyone. If you have the financial flexibility to cover large unexpected vet bills, you might self-insure through savings. But for many, especially those with multiple pets or high-risk breeds, pet insurance offers financial stability and emotional relief during tough times.

The Bottom Line

Pet insurance isn’t just about money—it’s about making sure you never have to choose between your pet’s health and your wallet. Review different providers, compare quotes, and choose a plan that fits your pet’s needs and your budget.
