Jackson in hunt for $100,000 dog park

From the Jackson Chamber – Join us as we chase the $100,000 #DogParkDash grant to create a new dog park and help Jackson to become the “Most Pet Friendly City in Tennessee!”

We need your help by posting pictures of your pet with the #DogParkDash and #JacksonTN on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The Dog Park Dash Grant is a program funded by The Randy Boyd Foundation to support our furry friends and awards $25,000 grants to communities across Tennessee.

Jackson has applied and is entered for the chance to win $100,000.

Only one city in Tennessee will be awarded the grand prize – but they must show their pet pride on social media to win.

Locally, the grant plans includes areas for small and large dogs with an agility course and water feature.

The park will be located next to the Ballpark at Jackson, the home of the Jackson Generals – making it the most pet friendly ballpark in the United States.

To learn more, join the pack on Facebook at Jackson, TN Dog Park Dash.

Share your pet’s special story and why we are the most pet friendly city in Tennessee.

Don’t own a dog? Donate your time at the Animal Care Center of Jackson or any of our local dog groups and post your pictures.

The grant is a collaborative project of the City of Jackson, the Jackson Generals, Visit Jackson TN and the Jackson Chamber.

IHOP changing names

International House of Pancakes, perhaps better known by the initials IHOP, is changing its name.

The company announced on Twitter it’s going from IHOP to IHOb, but they are not saying what the ‘B’ will stand for – until June 11.

IHOP is recognized as an American multinational pancake house/diner-style table service restaurant chain that specializes in breakfast foods.

It is owned by Dine Brands Global, with 99 percent of the restaurants run by independent franchisees.
Besides breakfast, IHOP also offers a menu of lunch and dinner items.

The company has 1,650 locations in North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania.

IHOP is located at 9 Stonebridge Blvd., in Jackson.

Construction set to begin on new Bemis Park

The vote was unanimous when the Jackson City Council considered a contract for the construction of Bemis Park, which will be located where Bemis Mill once stood at the corner of South Missouri and A Streets.

“It has been a two-year struggle; actually six, but the park will be located right in the center of Bemis,” said Vicky Foote, following the City Council’s monthly meeting, Tuesday. “All the sidewalks in Bemis led to the mill, and all the sidewalks in Bemis will now lead to the park.”

Vicky Foote, who represents District 1, said it has been six years since the property sold.

“It has been an eyesore,” Foote said. “The unanimous vote today showed how one vote can right the wrong of six years.”

A budget for the new Bemis Park was set at $400,000 for the park, with the John Herron Construction Company of Jackson, submitting the lowest bid at $292,061.

“We’re ready to start, and in the next two or three weeks we’ll be doing some work,” said Jerry Gist, mayor of Jackson. “We’re really going to put a park together the people of Bemis will be proud of, because they deserve it, and because they have been extremely patient.”

The majority of the materials will come from the original Bemis Mill, that was first constructed in 1900, but has been vacant since 1993.

An estimated 30,000 of the original bricks will be used to construct two 20-foot towers with a 10-foot high wall that will display the history of the Bemis Mill.

“The benches in the park will be made from the original wood,” Vicky Foote said. “The columns will denote the entrance of the park, and there will be a splash pad … basically, it won’t be like any other park we have here.”

Additional action taken during the City Council meeting included –
The consideration of an ordinance to rezone property located at 1765 Hollywood Drive from RG-2 (General Residential) District to O-C (Office Center) comprising about .52 acres.
