Jimmy Carter was President of the United States, the cost of a gallon of gasoline was 62 cents, and the average cost of a new home was $49,300.
That was 1977, the same year Morton’s Moving and Storage opened in Jackson.
Forty years later, the company – an agent for Allied Van Lines – will close at the end of September.
“We stopped doing long hauls in January, and we’re not booking any more business after September 30,” Amelia Morton said. “This is the hardest thing I have had to do … announce we were closing.”
Amelia’s late husband, Dale was raised in the moving and storage business in Murfreesboro.
His father, W.W. Morton began a career in the moving business in 1956, and Dale expanded the operations to Jackson in 1977.
Dale opened Morton’s Moving and Storage on Rosedale Street, and moved the operations to a new 12,000-square-foot facility on 15 Miller Drive in 1985, the same year he became the sole proprietor.
Amelia said the company, which she would sell, has seven full-time and several part-time employees.
