Jackson Tennessee, March 13, 2018-Local students mark the one month anniversary of Florida school shooting
According to Jackson Madison County school officials observance by local students participating in the National School Walkout will be allowed but under strict guidelines. Law-enforcement will be present and other school safety procedures are being implemented. School spokesperson Keli McCallister says that out of safety interest for the students those procedures will not be released to the public
Students across the country plan to walk out of class at 10 am local time on Wednesday, March 14, for the National Student Walkout,
The event marks the one-month anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida
National organizers of the event in a press release say students around the country are uniting to call for changes in gun laws and regulations l.
The walkout, with the tagline #EnoughIsEnough, will last 17 minutes — one minute for each person who was killed in the Parkland Fl shooting. The school walk out is being described as a memorial to honor victims killed by firearms And a protest to urge lawmakers to pass stricter gun reform.
Prosecutors in Florida have said they will seek the death penalty if the alleged shooter is convicted.
In a local statement released by Jackson Madison County schools, “The District has given guidance to our principals, all of whom will allow student-led observations. We also have security measures in place. However, out of concern for the safety of our students we are not discussing those publicly. ”
In an effort to increase security and limit distractions, we will not allow members of the media on our campuses during the observance.
School officials are not commenting on which if any Jackson Madison County schools student led protesters will participate in the walk out.
