Viewed as an anchor for the development off Dr. F.E. Wright Drive, The Ballpark at Jackson turns 20-years-old, when the Jackson Generals face the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at 6:05 p.m., today.
101.5 FM and WNWS.COM visited with Cary Henson, president of Henson Construction Services to discuss the park that first opened in April 1998.
Question: Do you remember when the project started?
Answer: I believe it was about a 10 month project, which started in June of 1997, and opened in April of 1998.
Question: What was the most challenging part of building the park?
Answer: The most challenging issues I recall were the Budget and the schedule.
Looking now at what we accomplished for $8 million seems amazing.
It would probably cost $20 million or more today to reproduce the stadium. Henson Construction worked diligently with Heery International and the City of Jackson to maintain the budget, which was accomplished.
There was some Value Engineering Re-bid of work items to stay within budget.
Question: You mentioned working with the City of Jackson. Will you name a few of those who were instrumental in making the stadium a reality?
Answer: I recall JEA and the City assisting with some items to help maintain the Budget. Jerry Gist, who is now Mayor of Jackson, played a very important role in coordinating some work with City/JEA equipment/personnel.
(NOTE: Jerry Gist was the executive director of public works during the time of construction of the stadium)
Question: In the time it took to build what became Pringles Park, but is now The Ballpark at Jackson, do you remember any obstacles in construction of the stadium?
Answer: As with any project, weather is a critical factor that can positively or negatively impact schedule an costs.
I recall that we had significant rains during some of the critical earth moving operations. In fact, I specifically recall getting stuck on-site in my Hummer, and the site contractor having to pull me out.
