BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Union University women’s basketball team swept the Gulf South Conference Women’s Basketball West Division Weekly honors. Shanique Lucas was named the GSC West Player of the Week, while Sally Howell, a 2020 graduate of Trinity Christian Academy, was named the GSC West Freshman of the Week.
According to Steven Aldridge – Union’s Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Communication – this is the first player of the week honor for Lucas this year and second for Union (Williams 12/15/20). This is Howell’s first freshman of the week award and first for Union this season.
Lucas, a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard from Papua New Guinea, helped Union to a 2-0 week with two big wins at West Alabama. For the week, she averaged 20 points, four rebounds, and three steals, while shooting 58 percent from the field. Lucas leads Union at 16.1 points per game.
Howell, a 5-foot-7 freshman from Jackson, Tenn. (Trinity Christian Academy) played in Saturday’s win at West Alabama, scoring six points on a couple of 3-pointers. This was her first action of the season.
On the week, Union won at West Alabama twice, including 87-68 Friday and 88-55 Saturday. The 87 and 88 points scored this week were Union’s top two point totals of the season. Union is 6-2 on the year and currently tied for first in the GSC West with Mississippi College. Ironically, Union will host MC this weekend with games Friday and Saturday.
