Union University basketball – men back in tie for GSC lead after win over Lee; women fall

Union men back in a tie for first in GSC with 61-54 win over Lee

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men’s basketball team defeated Lee University 61-54 Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium/David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 10-6 overall and 9-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee dropped to 10-3 on the season and 9-3 in league play.

Union head coach David Niven said, “The game is not going to flow very well when you have two teams that play great defense. It came down to half-court production. We got good production on some tough shots from several guys, including Jeremiah (Littlepage) and JT (Dubuck). It was also nice to see the big 3-pointer from freshman Layne Sarver late in the game that served as a back-breaker. I’m proud of how our guys battled offensively and on the boards.”

Union opened the game with a successful alley-oop from Jalen Johnson to Jeremiah Littlepage to put Union up 2-0. Union pushed out to a 5-1 lead before Lee rallied to lead 9-8 for the first time in the game. Union went right back on top with back-to-back 3-pointers from Justin Debuck and Tylandrius Parks to lead 14-11. Union extended its lead to six 57-51, matching its largest lead with just over a minute left. Union was 4-for-4 from the free throws line in the final 26 seconds to push its lead to 10 points, the largest of the night for either team. A Lee 3-pointer at the buzzer set the final at 61-54.

Union dominated the boards 43-27, while both teams were in single digits in turnovers. Union’s defense held Lee to just 34 percent shooting in the game, well below their 50 percent average entering the game.
