Threat of Severe Weather, Cautionary Measures

With a strong chance of severe weather in the area here are some quick tips for safety

1) Have a plan- the number one thing is to simply have a plan in the event of severe weather. Know where the safest part of your house is—places like a basement, small rooms like an inside closest or bathroom with no windows and in-ground storm shelters are the safest places to be, according to NOAA.

NOAA PREPAREDNESS GUIDE

2) If you are caught out in the open, NOAA says seek refuge in the nearest sturdy building. Without one of those, they say your best option is to lay flat on the ground, as far away from cars and trees as possible. For those on the road, NOAA recommends avoiding seeking shelter under bridges, which offer little protection from debris and winds. Instead, park your car, keep your seat belt on and keep your head below the windows.

2) Be Alert- Be alert and pay attention to what’s going on.  If you’re at home, monitor the weather  make sure to have a weather radio and subscribe to Point5Digital Text Alerts. A severe weather text alert will let you know when inclement weather is in the area.  If you hear tornado sirens or receive an alert about a tornado warning in your area, it’s time to take your plan into action.

Those living in mobile homes should be particularly aware of incoming severe weather. Those homes may not offer sufficient protection from high winds—even non-tornadic ones.
