Tennessee Highway Patrol officer arrested; 1 of 3 terminated in this West TN community

Savannah, TN – A decorated member of the Tennessee Highway Patrol has been arrested and terminated, along with two additional troopers who were also dismissed from the agency.

According to court documents, Lt. Adam Potts was involved in a single-vehicle crash in January on Highway 64 near Coffee Landing.

The documents allege that Potts left the scene of the injury crash and initially told law enforcement that a family member had been driving the vehicle.

An investigation was launched, during which Potts reportedly admitted to being the driver.

It remains unclear what roles the other troopers played in the incident, but the Tennessee Highway Patrol released the following statement:
“Lt. Adam Potts, Sgt. Darby Drinkard, and Trooper Terry Milholen were all terminated for the good of the service and for cause, due to violations of departmental policies.”

My son and his friends were hit head-on when a teenager swerved into their lane and crushed a lot of major bones and my son‘s body. He laid in the hospital for a couple months. The teenage driver was obvious and completely at fault and had no insurance, but Ofc. Terry Milholen didn’t even ask him if he had insurance. My son had no way to recoup a half a million dollars in medical bills. Terry didn’t even cite the teenager for anything. No reckless driving. No inattentive driving. No lack of insurance, which is required by Tennessee law (if asked!). Nothing. The kid went home and bought a new truck and bragged about it on Facebook the next week while my son was laying in the hospital and scheduling more surgeries. I did a little searching and found out Terry’s son was friends with the teenager who had been in jail a couple times – an absolute scumbag of a person and not deserving of Terry letting him off without anything while my son suffered. I filed a formal complaint with Terry’s agency and they found no fault. Remarkable! How could they find no fault for such an egregious lack of simple law-enforcement? I’m so disgusted that TN has such corrupt and incompetent law-enforcement officers as Terry who didn’t think it was important to issue a single citation to his son’s friend while my son suffered so badly! This corruption in Tennessee is appalling and the lack of any fault found in the internal investigation indicates that we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg because Lieutenant Potts happened to crash his vehicle. I hope Terry Milholen doesn’t get another law-enforcement job – he belongs at Home Depot where he can’t hurt anyone anymore.

  2. I am truly sorry for what your family went through. It seems there are more and more stories of corruption from that department. I know there are many good ones in law enforcement, but there are also many who believe they are above the law. I read Lt Potts’ confession, his friend released, and it is being shared like wildfire. I found many things odd in his story. First, I hope he has strengthened his relationship with God, ultimately, the only judge that matters. I read that and saw many, including fellow troopers, share and sing his praises for confessing. I don’t understand why people are blindly supporting this. First of all, if he was going to drink heavily and kill himself, I find it odd that a one-vehicle accident with injuries would warrant a suicidal person to seek medical treatment. Second, what kind of a man lies and blames their son? It appears he was drinking and driving. Now that it hit the fan, suddenly he has PTSD and is an alcoholic. Honestly, this angered me. I am not making light of the seriousness of the job. I am certainly not defending the department, but what kind of “humble” apology attempts to shift the blame on someone else? He apologizes for getting 2 others fired. Why? They dishonored their badges and oath. Just as in your son’s case, no one is above the law. I don’t care who you are or who you know. Someone I love dearly had a serious complaint, and the department dismissed the incident. They investigate their own. They have no problem upsetting innocent people’s lives to protect their own in the department, family, or friends. PTSD is real. This was also a slap in the face to those who truly suffer from PTSD. Anyone going into that line of work knows the potential risks and what they will deal with. If they cannot handle it, they need to find a healthy way to deal with it or do something else. I know lots of officers, have 4 in my immediate family. It is unbelievable what they see and deal with, but they chose that path. Officers like the one you speak of, Lt Potts, and Sgt Drinkard, should not be seeking public attention with their victim mentality; they should be embarrassed and ashamed of dishonoring the badge and putting all LEOs in a bad light.

Sgt. Drinkard worked a wreak I was involved in. She was very professional and went over and beyond to go to my parents home and notify my Dad and Mom of my condition. Sgt. Drinkard did an outstanding job that day where most would not have. It’s a shame to see the THP lose her and keep ones like Ivey who shows up without a warrant and shoves a shotgun in the face of the home owner looking for someone else. That’s the ones THP needs to discipline.
