Strictly Business – In case you missed it, here’s a look back at this week’s highlights

In case you missed it, here’s a look back at a few business highlights for the past week.

The Local opens downtown

The Lost Reserve, Indigo Scents Candle Co., and Hub City Love – which shares space with Garner Blue Shop – opened at The Local, Saturday.

“The Local,” consists of three separate 300-square-foot facilities, and is located at the corner of West Lafayette Street and North Shannon Street in downtown Jackson.

Presented by the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation, the units will provide physical micro-retail spaces for local entrepreneurs and artisans to sell their goods and develop their businesses in a low overhead environment.

A green space is attached which will accommodate various types of programming to enhance the social aspect of the project.

The development was made possible by a grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

Former bank demolished

A former bank building at the corner of North Highland Avenue and Old Hickory Boulevard near the Old Hickory Mall is being demolished.

Officials at the Old Hickory Mall, 2021 North Highland Ave., said the demolition is for new development.

Mam’selle

When construction is complete, Mam’selle is scheduled to occupy just over 2,000-square-feet at Union Station, a new 12,000-square-foot faciltity next door to Mulligan’s on Union University Drive in Thomsen Farms.

A target date of April 1, 2018 has been set for Mam’selle, which is located at 907 Vann Drive.
Mam’selle, which offers clothing, shoes, purses and jewelry for women, has been in Jackson since 1973.

Chris Carothers, Hickman Realty Group, said he is in discussion with two additional tenants at the facility, which has up to seven total units available.

JEA purchasing 17 new vehicles

Jackson Energy Authority board members approved the purchase of nine vehicles totaling $353,629.00 from Lonnie Cobb Ford of Henderson.

Eight vehicles totaling $191,794.00 will be purchased from Homer Skelton Chrysler Dodge Jeep of Millington.

The inventory consists of four (4) ¾-ton 4WD extended cab & chassis for 117,948.00, four (4) 1-ton diesel 4WD crew cab & chassis with dual rear wheels for $190,128.00, and one (1) ¾-ton 2WD extended cab & chassis with a CNG service body installed for $45,553.00 meeting the Authority’s specifications and as verified by the submitted bid.

The inventory consists of one (1) ½-ton extended cab 2WD pickup for $23,453.00, one (1) ½-ton extended cab 4WD pickup for $26,705.00, three (3) ½-ton regular cab 2WD pickups for $67,089.00, and three (3) ¾-ton high roof cargo vans for $74,547.00 meeting the Authority’s specifications and as verified by the submitted bid.

Megasite

News that the Memphis Regional Megasite isn’t prepared for a tenant came as a surprise to most in attendance at the Southwest Tennessee Development District in Jackson, Tuesday.

“When they’re (industry) ready to go they want a shovel-ready site immediately…and that’s not where we are right now,” said Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bobby Rolfe.

Rolfe said the two latest mega-employer prospects have moved on to look at other locations.

Toyota, poised to build a new auto manufacturing plant somewhere in the United States, was one of the industrial giants considering the site.

Though the other company remains unnamed, apparently it was an appliance manufacturer.

Beer Board

Five permits were approved by the Jackson Beer Board when members met at the City Council Chambers, Tuesday.

Stanley Mack Flowers, on behalf of Ducks Unlimited, was granted a special occasion permit to sell, store and serve beer at an event to be held on November 16, at the Jackson Fairgrounds Park.
