In case you missed it, here’s a look back at this week’s business highlights.

Jackson Clinic announces addition of new Hospitalist

The Jackson Clinic has added Dr. Hafsa Zia to their Hospitalist Department, which is located at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

Dr. Zia received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Rawalpindi Medical College, Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, and completed her internship at Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

Dr. Zia received her undergraduate degree at IMCG F-6/2, Islamabad, Pakistan.

She is Board Eligible, American Board of Internal Medicine.

Hospitalists specialize in the total medical care and experience of hospitalized patients.

Hospitalists coordinate nurses, specialists and surgeons for a patient’s care, and they also document the hospital stay including diagnoses, medications and examinations for continual comprehensive treatment of the patient.

They keep the patient’s primary care physician informed and up to date of the patient’s progress.

New parking lot approved for Exit 87 BBQ, new restaurant in the future

From a concession stand, which included a truck and a grill, to a permanent location off Interstate 40 at Highway 70, you might not think Josh Wadley’s story could not get any bigger, but it is going to expand.

Josh, who opened Exit 87 BBQ, Feb. 28, 2007, is in the process of adding a new parking lot, and eventually – a new restaurant – on .92 acres directly behind the existing facility.

We (have) approval for our site plans, and we are putting in new truck parking and a future new restaurant, Josh said, “This is safer than the parking lot we have right now, and it’s just an awesome experience.”

The site plan shows a parking lot with a total of 11 car and 11 semi-truck parking spaces, which meets the parking requirements for a restaurant.

It is configured with two driveways, the one to the north will be shared access for future development.

The parking layout, driveways and drive aisles are all designed to meet city specifications and allow for the proper circulation of internal and external traffic.

Carrico’s Pizza opening in Thomsen Farms

A resident of Somerville, Charlie Harrell believes Jackson is the right location to open Carrico’s Pizza, which is located at 1370 Union University Drive in Thomsen Farms.

We looked around (West Tennessee) and Jackson is growing so much, and Thomsen Farms looks like the area that is exploding the most,” Harrell said, “I’ve worked for the Milano’s Pizza chain, and this will be my first time to own a restaurant.”

Named for his grandparents, Carrico’s will occupy about 1,400-square-feet, with seating for 40 people.
Besides pizza, Charlie said Carrico’s will offer additional items that include pizza rolls and pasta.

“It will be staffed by me, my brother John, and Jesus Garcia,” Charlie said, “We’ll be open six days a week … closed Mondays, but we’re still discussing that.”

Prospective tenants invited to Fall Festival at Downtown Union Square Apartments

Adrian Del Rio may live in Sacramento, Calif., but he has a vested interest in Jackson – and it’s growing.

A businessman, Del Rio purchased and renovated a dilapidated apartment/dormitory at the old Union University campus at 610 E. College St., and his organization is holding a ‘Fall Festival’ at the new complex from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, October 20.

“With Jackson Walk and the Lift Center as anchors, it has attracted so many good tenants such as Rock N Dough Pizza, Grubb’s Grocery, and so many more,” Adrian Del Rio said. “Most recently, Hub City Brewing/Bowling Alley announced it will be opening soon in downtown – plus the historic Greyhound Bus Station was recently purchased, which I imagine is going to be redeveloped. The Downtown is growing and is going to be the place to live.”

Continuing, Del Rio said “Downtown Union Square Apartments is a gated community that is comprised of 26 apartment units (1 Bed and 2 Bed) which features all new granite counters, appliances, energy efficient lighting, ceiling fans, central HVAC, balconies, and WIFI Connectivity.”

Del Rio said each of these amenities are being offered at a very reasonable grand opening rate.

“We love our current tenants which are a mix of working professionals from the medical and law enforcement industry, students, and recent graduates,” Del Rio said. “We’ve also purchased the two buildings next door at 604 E. College St., and 609 E. Lafayette.

“We plan on providing more renovated gated housing, plus expanding our parking lot for 610 E. College Street.”

New business hopes to have business brewing in downtown Jackson

A dormant building received an influx of new life when local businessman Jerry Corley announced Hub City Brewing will occupy 250 West Main Street, Monday.

“We’re going to have a full brewery, assembly, a full stage, tap room and four bowling lanes we’re putting in … we’ll have a good events center for downtown Jackson,” Corley said. “The concept came from visiting other breweries from all over the southeast, seeing what they had and didn’t have.

“A lot breweries have a tap room, but not a bowling alley or a full stage, so it will give visitors something to do when they get here.”

Corley, who also owns Rock N Dough + Brew Co., at 16 Jackson Walk, said the stage for entertainment will be about 30-feet by 20-feet, with permanent sound and lighting.

“We’ll also have an elevated patio outside,” Corley said. “(Overall) it’s going to be great, and we’re excited about it.”

Corley said about nine different beers will be brewed and distributed across the state of Tennessee – for starters.

“We’ll manufacture and distribute beer across the state,” Corley said. “But this (facility) will be about friendships, community, downtown and all of our history.”

Corley said Hub City Brewing will occupy about 14,000-square-feet of the 20,000-square-foot building that first opened in 1916 as a Ford Automobile dealership.

RND Holdings LLC, purchased 250 West Main Street, from James Michael Crews, Donna K. Crews, Jeffrey M. Crews and Jennifer M Crews for $250,000.

The business is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2019.

“It’s great to see a lot of the older buildings with such good history and architecture being purchased,” Chris Alexander said. “Buyers are coming in and renovating, and the downtown market continues to grow and evolve.”

Chris Alexander is the vice president of retail and development for Healthy Community LLC.

“We have a beautiful downtown core that encompasses several blocks,” Alexander said. “We’ve seen the investment in several areas of downtown Jackson … Jackson Walk, The Blacksmith Bar & Grill and Baker’s Family Pharmacy over the last five years – and there’s plenty of room for more growth.”
