Legislative report card rates lawmakers’ records on education
October, 10,2014 – State Sen. Lowe Finney earned an A+ in 2014 for his votes to
support public schools, according to the Tennesseans Reclaiming Educational
Excellence (TREE) Legislative Report Card.
“The importance of a high quality education on a child’s life cannot be
overstated,” Sen. Finney said. “With the right investments, support for our
teachers and appropriate accountability, our schools can deliver the kind
of education we want for our children.”
In 2014, Sen. Finney sponsored the Community Schools Act, which authorizes
schools to establish partnerships with community groups and businesses to
provide enrichment and life skill opportunities for students, parents and
the community at large.
Among the votes TREE used to assess legislators’ performance was Sen.
Finney’s support for legislation that requires a teacher’s experience and
education be factored into decisions about teacher salaries as well as
legislation to require local school districts to provide parents with
information about mandated tests, including the date, purpose and use.
