MADISON County- (November 17, 2014) — Monday’s Madison County Commission meeting included discussions of property zoning for a possible Milan Express Distribution Center,
Stan Pilant with the Jackson City Planning Department brought for consideration a resolution to re-zone property located south of highway 412E and the east side of Highway 70. The rezoning is the first phase of possible development of a Milan express distribution center.
Before you can develop on property the first step is to see that the property is properly zoned. Milan Express has an already existing facility on Hwy 70 and is interested in the possibility of expanding that to include a possible distribution center.
Barry Jones, speaking for the Milan Express property owners, said the owners want to have the rezoning approved as the first step to development of warehouse distribution and possible commercial use.
Some residents were concerned and spoke at the public hearing. Gail Heavner told commissioners she was concerned about the possible effect on property values and how it would change the overall appeal of the area from residential to commercial. Evan East, another resident, told commissioners his concerns were about traffic congestion and noise.
Pilant says from the beginning the city told Milan Express representatives they wanted a separation between the industrial and the residential along Browns Church Road. Pilant says Milan Express presented a plan to planning that did not include industrial zoning along Browns Church Road.
Pilant said he believes the plan gives proper buffering between the interests of the residents and the needs of development. This is the first phase of development and future approval will be required if the project moves ahead. No word on when or how soon that will be.
