Details are limited, but plans for a medical school at the University of Memphis Lambuth campus are underway, after Dr. Bill Hardgrave, president of the University of Memphis made the announcement when the Jackson Rotary Club met at First United Methodist Church, Wednesday.
Plans for the medical school, which would produce physicians who would become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.
A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) is a fully licensed physician who practices a holistic approach to healthcare. DOs concentrate on treating the whole person rather than just specific symptoms, emphasizing the connection between the mind, body, and spirit. They are trained in all areas of medicine, including family medicine, surgery, and pediatrics, and utilize osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) as part of their practice.
Physicians in West Tennessee and areas around Memphis tend to practice in areas where they finished their residency.
