The Kansas City Chiefs are planning to place the franchise tag on offensive guard Trey Smith, sources told NFL Network’s lan Rapoport. The Pro Bowl lineman will remain with the Chiefs for another season on a one-year, $23.4-million contract.
The two sides hope to agree to terms on a long-term deal with negotiations expected to continue, Rapoport added. The 25-year-old will become the highest-paid player at this position, exceeding Philadelphia Eagles guard Landon Dickerson, who earns $21 million per season.
NFL clubs have until 4 p.m. ET Monday to use the franchise tag. Smith will have until July 15 to agree to long-term contract.
If no deal is reached, the Tennessee product will play out the 2025 season under the one-year tender.
The 2021 sixth-round pick has been one of the more reliable staples on the Chiefs’ offensive line. He’s started 67 games during his four seasons with the franchise and has made 13 playoff starts.
