Jimmy Carmichael Teaching Three Generations Of Swimmers

One of Jacksons most beloved swim teachers, Jimmy Carmichael, is putting his swim trunks away and retiring after his lifelong career. What started in 1976 as just a pool in his backyard, has become a 50 year long legacy of Carmichael Swim School.

Carmichael’s teaching career has lasted 64 years as he started teaching at the since closed VFW, 14 years before opening his own well known, Carmichael Swim School. Teaching has been his legacy ever since 1962.

“I built a pool in my backyard in 1976 and we’ve been calling it the Carmichael Swim School ever since 1976”, Carmichael said. “But I started teaching swimming 14 years before that and taught every place you could get wet in Jackson for a number of years.”

The school has become a family business with his daughters Kelly and Katy, his granddaughters Claire and Meredith and his son-in-law Chris, all teaching classes at Carmichaels. Since 1976, Carmichaels has taught three generations swimming lessons. Although Jimmy Carmichael will be retiring this summer, he will still be available for occasional private lessons.

If you would like to meet Carmichael or if you have learned to swim at Carmichaels, you can attend their come-and-go meet and greet to celebrate Carmichaels retirement on Sunday, June 14, from 1-3 p.m.
