Jackson Madison County School Board Discusses Budget

(July 15, 2013) Jackson TN – County Finance Director Mike Nichols presented the board their financial report for the month and board members had questions.

Members questioned the process and how the system seemed to operate in a deficit .  Bob Alvey questioned whether there was an incentive to come in under budget since the money saved could not be used by the school for future needs. Budget saving are reverted back to the county.  Dr Verna Ruffin expressed concern if the system is forced to operate out of the fund balance for anything other than emergency.

Dr Ruffin introduced Dr Versie Hamlett to explain Common Core and how it is up to the State and local education authority to devise a curriculum to meet standards.  After the presentation Board member Jeff Head suggested that the Central Office prepare to give their presentation to the county commissioners and to the public. Head said he knew many people are scared and confused about Common Core. He added that he believed if they knew the truth they would see the opportunities it presents to get involved in their child's education even more than ever.

Dr Ruffin will host a community meeting Saturday July 20th 6:30 PM Lincoln Court Community Center. The public is invited
