Jackson City Council updated on area development; approves new seating at Civic Center

Updates on projects in Districts 1 and 2 of the Community Reinvestment Act, and the allocation of about $423,000 to improve seating at the Carl Perkins Civic Center highlighted the Jackson City Council’s monthly meeting at Jackson City Hall, Tuesday.

“We made a presentation before the City Council … a progress report on what we are doing in District 1 for the CRA,” Hal Crocker said. “We just completed our (High Point) apartment buildings (and) we have new homes we’re working on on Deaderick Street, Morgan Street and Johnson Street … trying to make a connection between downtown, Jackson Walk and the University of Memphis Lambuth.”

Hal Crocker and Henry Turley of Healthy Community LLC, co-developed Jackson Walk and High Point Apartments.

Crocker, who owns Crocker Construction Company, said 34 new homes have been built near the apartment complexes.

“A lot of progress has been made, especially downtown, with Jackson Walk and the Roundabout (and) we’re glad to hear about 30 percent of those new one bedroom (High Point) apartments have been leased,” said Jerry Gist, mayor of Jackson. “District 2 has made some progress … Whitehall and F.E. Wright Drive with commercial development.”

David Hunt, a Jackson businessman discussed the activity of District 2.

Expect some traffic delays as Roundabout construction picks up

Work is scheduled to begin near the end of May on the seating in the lower level of the Carl Perkins Civic Center.

“Work will start on the understructure and continue into June on some of the most heavily damaged seats,” said Tosh Newman, facilities manager at the Civic Center and Oman Arena. “Once the Miss Tennessee Pageant ends, the remainder of the seats will be replaced.

“We are going to harvest some of the good seats to replace the bad, and new seats will replace those we harvested.”

Newman said the cost would be about $1.2 million if all the seats in the lower level of the Civic Center were new.
