Local communities in West Tennessee are coming together on August 31,  at 6:30 p.m., to remember those who have died from drug overdose and call for action to prevent further deaths.

The gathering is being organized as part of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), a global campaign that brings people together to take action on overdose.

IOAD is observed on August 31 each year, with events taking place throughout the week in approximately 40 countries. The theme for 2026 is ’25 years on. Still needed’.

For our local community we are hosting our event in Jackson, Tennessee at the Amphitheater at the Market (AMP), 91 New Market Street. We are having a candle lighting ceremony, photo display, community resources, and most of all, hope & healing.

In 2023 West Tennessee lost 681 lives to overdose.

“Overdose affects families in every part of our community. Our work is about making sure people have the tools to prevent another loss.”

“International Overdose Awareness Day is a chance to come together with other people in the community who understand what it means to lose someone to overdose.”

“But it’s also about pushing for change, locally and globally. We invite everyone in the community to attend our event on August 31 to help our campaign for a world without overdose.”

The Jackson‑Madison Prevention Coalition was established 20 years ago to support efforts that reduce substance misuse in our community. We use practical strategies, local partnerships, and accessible resources to strengthen prevention and address the factors that contribute to substance use. Our approach shifts as community needs change, keeping our work relevant and useful.
