Faith Leaders Statewide Urge Action On Immigration Reform

(October 25, 2013) Jackson, TN – Church leaders from across the state urged Tennessee members of the U.S. House to support comprehensive immigration reform, in a letter sent to them Thursday.

One of the letters was sent to Rep. Stephen Fincher and included the signatures of Monsignor Thomas Kirk of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Jackson and Father Dennis Schenkel, St. Jude Catholic Church, Martin.

In part, the letter read:

“For those of us in the faith community, this is about core values we all share: love of family and love of country.

“While we cannot throw open the borders, we cannot send all those here without documentation back where they came from. It’s not realistic, and it would devastate thousands of families. That serves no moral good.”

The Senate passed comprehensive immigration reform legislation during the summer, but it is not expected to be considered by the House. Instead, they will likely draft their own version, then a conference committee will hammer out the differences and produce a piece of legislation that can pass both houses.
