The search engine Google is incorporated as a private company, the University of Kentucky won the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the year at 9,181, $1.15 would buy you a gallon of gas and a postage stamp cost 32 cents.
The year was 1998 – and the date was Feb. 3, when Elaine West opened The Bakers Rack at 203 E. Lafayette St., in downtown Jackson.
The next chapter for The Bakers Rack begins when Elaine steps aside after Friday, after selling the popular restaurant to Allison Wright, Employee Wellness Coordinator at West Tennessee Healthcare.
“I’m really going to miss the customers and my employees, immensely,” Elaine said, “They’ve all been such a big family and a big help to me these last 21 years. We’re all care about each other quite a bit … and I really appreciate everybody supporting us for the last 21 years.
“We could not have done it without the customers, and they have helped us grow and I’m going to miss everybody.”
