State Representative Jimmy Eldridge (R-Jackson) honored former Tennessee State Senator Bobby Carter during a bridge naming ceremony at the Old Country Store in Jackson, today.
A portion of Tennessee State Route 5 spanning the middle fork of the Forked Deer River in Madison County will now be known as the “Senator Bobby Carter Memorial Bridge.”
Carter represented the 27th Senate District from 1995-2002, serving on three different committees during his tenure as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly. He is also recognized for his efforts founding West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation and for serving as a board member for the local chapters of three national organizations — Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army, and United Way.
Carter was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 1980s and died in January of 2015. He was 75 at the time of his death.
“Senator Carter was a tremendous public servant who left behind a remarkable legacy in our community and all of West Tennessee,” said Chairman Eldridge. “He was also a great friend, and it is an honor to recognize him for his contributions by naming this bridge in his honor. It will ensure that our future leaders understand the critical role Senator Carter played in shaping the history of our region and our state.”
