NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A young man who was born in a prison hospital and raised by his disabled grandmother has received a full scholarship for Vanderbilt University's M.D./Ph.D. program. That's a parallel degree path toward becoming a physician and research scientist.
The Tennessean reports that 22-year-old Cody Stothers ended up at Vanderbilt thanks to an outreach mission aimed at gifted students from rural areas and disadvantaged backgrounds.
A few years ago, the Aspirnaut program put computers on rural Arkansas school buses. Stothers first got involved by helping the younger students with their computer skills.
Since then, he has also been involved in research through the Aspirnaut program. This month, he and 82 other students in the program co-authored a journal article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
