Section of SR 690 – future Interstate 69 – opens in Obion County, Wednesday

JACKSON, Tennessee – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is ready to open the mainline of SR 690 (future I-69) in Obion County, Wednesday, February 21.

Crews will be there Wednesday morning to make the transition from the current roadway to the new roadway direction.

The section from west of SR 21 to south of SR 5 in Obion County has taken multiple projects over a decade and an investment of over $220 million.

The US 51 interchange with US Highway 45 in Tennessee, stretching into Kentucky, is identified for funding in TDOT’s 10-Year Project Plan, with construction scheduled in Fiscal Year 2028. Once completed, future I-69 in Tennessee will be connected to future I-69 in Kentucky.

From your desktop or mobile device, get the latest construction activity and live streaming SmartWay traffic cameras at www.TNSmartWay.com/Traffic. Travelers can also dial 511 for travel information, or follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/myTDOT for statewide travel or West Tennessee follow https://twitter.com/NicLawrenceTDOT.

As always, drivers are reminded to use all motorist information tools wisely and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before leaving for your destination. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on a cell phone while behind the wheel.

  1. Hi,
My name is Ms Theresa Bumpus. I live at 2011 East hwy 21, from Rives to Troy. This hwy is one of 3 hwy 21s in Obion co. There is also N hwy 21 from Union City no to Ky, and W hwy 21 from Troy to Hornbeak.
I read the Union City, Obion County TN.gov https://www.tn.gov › Studies › StatewidePlanning site. I was confused and deeply concerned that the maps were of only Union City instead of entire Obion County. I found almost no info for the impact on any other cities or areas even though I69 will have an impact in theTroy and Obion areas. I did find a tiny bit of info on Woodland Mills. I found no info about interchange of my road and I69. My long term concern is that my road will become a default bypass for traffic from Hwy 45 west to I69. My immediate concern is that my road will become a default bypass during the construction phase of I69. This coincides with the change in Obion schools of Ridgemont becoming a county regional middle school beginning fall 2026. In my opion, my road would be included in this plan. This would divert traffic from an already very congested section of W hwy 45 where Ridgemont, a fast growing housing area and a farming area are located. There has been an increase in severe accidents in this area (one yesterday 13 Feb). I am deeply concerned that I found no info about any of this in the study I read and that none of these concerns have been addressed or even thought of and included. I sincerely hope and pray that these concerns will be addressed as part of I69 project. Thank You Ms Theresa Bumpus
