MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The city of Memphis has filed an application to rename a downtown street after the late bluesman B.B. King.

The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1MV38nl ) reports Mayor A C Wharton’s administration applied to name a section of Third Street as B.B. King
Boulevard.

The renaming would require changing street signs at 35 intersections. It wouldn’t alter the street’s memorial designation as James L. Netters
Parkway, after civil rights advocate the Rev. James Netters.

The city has started notifying property owners along the 2.2-mile stretch that its application will be considered by the Office of Planning and
Development’s Land Use Control Board in August.

City Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Maura Sullivan says the name change would reflect the historic Memphis roots of King, who died in Las
Vegas in May at age 89.
