MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Prosecutors say a home nurse has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the death of a 3-year-old girl.
Shelby County prosecutors say 35-year-old Demequa Bonds faces two to four years in prison after she pleaded guilty Monday. Bonds is asking for diversion, which could keep her out of prison.
Bonds, of Cordova, was caring for Kayla Andrews in a Shelby County home in August 2012. The girl, who was on a ventilator and feeding tube, was born with Moebius syndrome, which can cause breathing problems.
Investigators said Bonds turned down the alarm on a pulse-monitoring machine, and no one was alerted when the child went into distress.
Bonds entered an Alford plea, which allows her to maintain her innocence. The plea has the same legal effect as a guilty plea.
