‘Something really nice’ – Affordable housing construction continues on Allen Avenue, Preston Street

By Isabelle Puente

After years of planning and a year of construction, Jackson residents can soon look forward to
new affordable housing.

The BlueCreek Apartments are set to open this summer and while the Cottages of BlueCreek are still under construction, the earliest opening date folks can look forward to will be later this year.

BlueCreek Apartments are under construction near the Jackson Housing Authority at 125 Preston Street, and The Cottages of BlueCreek replaces Allenton Heights at 164 Allen Avenue.

Allenton Heights was constructed in 1941 and would become Jackson’s oldest housing complex before it was demolished in September 2025.

Tennessee is currently facing a severe affordable housing crises, in 2025 the states poverty rate
was at 14% which is 3.4% above the national average.

These new housing complexes will not only provide affordable housing to low-income families but, they will also give the Allenton Heights area a fresh new look. Jeff Brasfield, vice president of Brasfield Construction Inc., gave Golden Media Group insight how the public has been responding to the new facility.

“From what I hear and just from me seeing it, it changes that whole block from what it was to
something really nice,” Brasfield said. “The apartments are very good looking … it changed the whole (dynamics) of that area.”

The BlueCreek Apartment complex will include three buildings, two-three story and one-two
story building with a variety of two and three bedroom suites. The complex will also offer a main office and a laundry area as well.

The Cottages of BlueCreek complex will include 58, one-bedroom units as well as an administration building.

The new complex was planned by Jackson Housing Authority with Brasfield Construction Inc., began the project in 2025. Jackson Housing Authority is also working on opening the BlueCreek Townhomes this year as well which will provide more affordable housing options in the Jackson area.
