West Tennessee Healthcare Board of Trustees – highlights from monthly meeting

The Board of Trustees of the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital District held its monthly meeting at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Highlights of the meeting included –

Special Report

Grant Studebaker, MD, UT Family Medicine Program Director, presented a special report on the UT Family Medicine Program.

Medical Staff Privileges

The Board approved recommendations for medical staff privileges at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital as presented by Dr. Michael Osayamen, Chief of JMCGH Medical Staff.

Resolution: Radiology PAC Viewer System

The Board approved a resolution presented by Deann Thelen, VP/CEO-JMCGH, to approve the upgrade of the Radiology GE PAC (Picture Archiving and Communications) Viewer System for a total cost of $1,141,521.17 from budgeted District funds.

Quality Dashboard

Dr. Jackie Taylor, Chief Physician Executive, presented the WTH Quality Dashboard.

Committee Reports

The Board heard a summary report from the IT Governance Committee presented by Mr. Danny Wheeler.

CFO Report

Jeff Blankenship, Chief Financial Officer, provided an update on the organization’s financial performance. August’s performance was slightly improved from July with higher volumes and revenue.

Year to-date, through the first two months of the fiscal year, the system’s operating margin has been a loss of -2% vs. -1.2% budgeted.

This reflects a trend of improvement month over month since March, with declining agency staffing costs and gradually improving volumes. Work continues on cost and performance improvement initiatives.

Management Report

Tina Prescott, Chief Operating Officer, recognized everyone who organized and participated in the Research Symposium held recently. This was a great event with a lot of participation and showcased the wonderful work we do in our system.

Ms. Prescott also shared that WTH Volunteer Hospital recently opened their Wound Care department and had a ribbon cutting recently. She also recognized the spirit of volunteerism of our Medical Center EMS staff who have sent a Strike Team to Florida in response to the state’s request and potential need for emergency crews in dealing with Hurricane Ian in the next few days.

Deann Thelen, VP/CEO-JMCGH announced that JMCGH has been recognized by the American College of Cardiology as a National Heart Center of Distinction. JMCGH is the only hospital in the State of Tennessee awarded this distinction. Congratulations to all of the teams involved in making this happen!

Darrell King, VP-WTMG, announced that that the Medicare program has recognized the West Tennessee Medical Group (WTMG), in conjunction with our Accountable Care Organization (ACO) affiliated with Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network (VHAN), for achieving high levels of quality and value in the delivery of healthcare to patients, thus saving the program over $4 million.
