New Campus Recreation Supervisor, Michael Stackens, Ready to Jumpstart Program in Newly Renovated Facility

JACKSON, Tenn. – Students on University of Memphis Lambuth Campus in Jackson now have more opportunities to participate in recreational activities due to both the renovation of the recreation center this summer, and the hiring of Michael Stackens as Campus Recreation Supervisor.

Stackens comes to the Lambuth Campus from the main campus of the University of Memphis, where he was the campus recreation intramural specialist. He earned a degree in sports management, and also played defensive end for the Memphis Tigers football team from 2004 – 2006.

This summer, the recreation center underwent significant renovations, including refurbishment of the basketball court and the addition of classroom space. While other projects are still ongoing, Stackens hopes the gym should be ready before the end of the month.

Under Stackens’ supervision and oversight, new intramural activities will include dodge ball, basketball, volleyball, and Frisbee. Other activities students can participate in include campus game days; punt, pass, and kick competitions; yoga; Zumba; as well as university-wide program called “Midday Moves,” designed to encourage students to incorporate physical activity in their daily lives. Students can also take advantage of a new fitness studio.

“Michael is a perfect fit for our campus as we work to increase opportunities for students to participate in campus life,” said Dr. Niles Reddick, Vice Provost for the Lambuth Campus. “His experience working for the university in Memphis will allow us to continue developing new programs, especially those that were highly successful there.”

A native of Selmer, Tenn., Michael played high school football, basketball, and baseball. He currently is a member of a pro-development football league, the Memphis Blast.
