JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University sophomore JJ Zimmer is playing in the 2023 NCAA D2 Men’s Golf National Championships, beginning with the Super Region Tournament in Davie, Florida.
According to a press release from Steven Aldridge – Union’s Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Communication – the Super Region consists of the top 10 teams from the South and Southeast Regions, along with the top individual qualifiers from both regions.
The region round will be played May 11-13 with the finals taking place May 22-26 in Warren, Ohio.
Zimmer, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Jackson, Tennessee, is playing as an individual. He is the first Union golfer to play in the NCAA D2 Nationals since Union’s return to NCAA play in 2012-13. Zimmer qualified as an individual last season but did not play due to an injury.
Zimmer is the No. 14 ranked individual among all golfers at the NCAA D2 level. He finished top-5 or better in eight of his nine events on the season. He posted two first-place finishes, including medalist honors at the Tunica Cup and the Hillcat Classic. He finished fourth at the Gulf South Conference Championships. Entering the nationals, Zimmer played in nine tournaments, 26 rounds, and posted a scoring average of 71.19.
At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional will advance to the finals, May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio. The remaining eight team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in the prior year’s head-to-head medal play portion of the championships, with the maximum number of teams from a given region capped at seven. The finals will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference and Avalon Lakes at The Grand Resort.
