CLINTON, Miss. – On Thursday night, the No. 19/20 Union University women’s basketball team won 70-62 over Mississippi College for their second straight victory. This was the Lady Bulldogs’ second matchup with the Choctaws this season with the first also ending in a Union win. Union is now 16-3 overall (11-1 GSC), while Mississippi College drops to 9-9 overall (5-7 GSC).
Jazalyn Anousinh became the latest Lady Bulldog to reach a career milestone this season when she made a layup in the paint with 3:11 seconds left in the fourth quarter for her 499th and 500th career points. Anousinh scored nine points in the game, all of which came in the second half. She also grabbed six boards and had four assists.
Macey Lee, a senior member of the Union University women’s basketball team pulled down her 500th career rebound in the Lady Bulldogs’ 86-69 win at West Florida on January 11.
Olivia Lee, a sophomore registered her 500th career point on January 18, in Union’s 77-59 victory over Trevecca Nazarene University.
Jeremia Montgomery, who reached 1,000 career points earlier in the season, also joined the 500 rebound club, January 18.
Thursday’s game was a close contest with eight lead changes and five ties. The first quarter saw only 18 total points with Union leading 11-7 going into the second period. Mississippi College outscored the Lady Bulldogs by one in the quarter to cut into the Union advantage. The Choctaws also won the third quarter, but Union put up 22 points to MC’s 15 in the fourth to seal the victory.
Union outshot Mississippi College 38.7 percent to 25 percent from beyond the arc and forced 31 Choctaw turnovers. However, the Choctaws had the advantage from the field 41.7 percent to 36.4 percent and from the free throw line 75 percent to 66.7 percent.
Bethany Dillard and Olivia Lee scored double-digits with 17 points and 11 points, respectively. Lee also had six rebounds. Jeremia Montgomery grabbed a personal season high four steals and put up two blocks to lead Union in both of those categories.
MC’s Tytiana Buckley led the Choctaws with 22 points, and Tiara Abron followed with 11 of her own. Keller Bigham grabbed nine boards to lead the team.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Cleveland, Miss., for another matchup with Delta State University. Tipoff is scheduled for Jan. 25 at 2:00 p.m.
