BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Union University’s Tyree Boykin was named the Gulf South Conference player of the Week for the week ending January 30, 2022. This is the first GSC weekly award for Union men’s basketball this season. It is the fifth GSC Player of the Week honor for Boykin in his career.
Boykin, a 6-1 senior guard from Clarksville, Tenn., averaged 27 points on 61.5 percent from the floor and 61.5 percent from three to help give the Bulldogs record wins at No. 25 West Alabama and at Auburn Montgomery last week.
Boykin scored 27 points on 7-of-11 shooting including four 3-pointers as Union topped nationally-ranked West Alabama on the road in a game for first place in the conference. Boykin also shot 90 percent (9-of-10) from the free throw line and added four assists.
In the win at Auburn Montgomery on Jan. 29, he netted 27 points off knocking down 9-of-15 (.600) from the field, 5-of-9 (.556) from three-point range and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free charity stripe.
Boykin now leads Union in scoring and is the second-highest scorer in the GSC averaging 19.4 points per game.
