The David Niven Basketball Camps have officially started for the summer.
Niven, who serves as men’s head basketball coach at Union University, has 31 years of coaching experience, and continues teaching his knowledge to children in the community.
The camps started June 22 and continue through August 1.
Each camp session concentrates on different skills such as basic fundamentals, shooting and core values, all while making sure to keep a center on faith and God.
Each day of camp also has a special word that players and coaches learn about and try to follow.
The camps are a great way to help kids in the community with their love for basketball and to show them that God can be with you through anything.
“Any time you get a chance to have kids be active and compete and learn a new skill is important,” Niven said. “But we also try to incorporate things that are biblical principles that can impact them beyond the game of basketball.”
The camp allows children ages seven through 17 to attend and even offers a special sleep-away camp where attendants stay in the Union University dorm rooms overnight and have a long fun-filled day of basketball.
Niven began coaching at Union University in 1997 as a volunteer assistant and became head coach in 2009.
His camp has surpassed the three decade mark, and he has taught two generations about the rules and love of the game. He hopes to continue his commitment of teaching basketball throughout the future.
