TSU Clinic Gives Free Hearing Tests to Homeless

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee State University is offering free hearing tests to the homeless.

Some homeless people were screened last month, and those needing further assessment were given an evaluation at TSU's Audiology Clinic on the Avon Williams campus near downtown Nashville.

Dr. Valeria Matlock is an associate professor and coordinator of the clinic. She says the evaluations give results that indicate the type and degree of hearing loss.

A report by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association shows that about one in five Americans has some type of hearing loss caused by illnesses such as ear infection, influenza, head injuries or noise exposure.
