Tim Gilmer, principal at Thelma Barker Elementary School, has been named the new director of athletics for the Jackson-Madison County School System.
“My first day was Monday, and I’m excited,” said Gilmer, who will also remain as principal at Thelma Barker. “This is a great time for this, and Dr. (Eric) Jones, made this happen. This is something that has been needed for a long time.”
Dr. Eric Jones is the superintendent of the Jackson-Madison County School System.
Before becoming principal at Thelma Barker, Gilmer held the same position at Liberty High School for 1.5 years.
From 2004 to 2016, Gilmer worked in the Hollow-Rock Bruceton School System – six years as principal at Central High School, and five years as principal of Hollow-Rock Bruceton Central Middle School.
He also served as head football coach from 2004 to 2008.
Gilmer, who earned master’s degree in educational leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University, and a bachelor’s degree from Maryville College, worked as dean of students and teacher at the University School of Jackson from 1992-2004.
From 1988 to 1992 he was an assistant football coach and worked in the student services office at Lambuth University.
“The first thing we’ll do is make an assessment for the schools … set some goals … where we need to be, and what we need to do to get there,” Gilmer said. “We are going to look at what is best for the students.”
