Direct Shred – Ben Miller has this small business at its best
Ben Miller, owner of Direct Shred, visited with NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM & WNWS.COM for a question and answer session.
Question: First, some background about yourself. Where are you originally from, family and education?
Answer: I am proud to say I’m from Jackson. I graduated from a local, private school, and received my Bachelor of Science in Theology in 2009. My wife and I have been married since 2005, and we have a three year old son. My wife works at Direct Shred with me and is my office manager. All of my family still live and work in and around Jackson.
Question: How long have you worked in the document destruction business, and when did you decide to start Direct Shred, and what motivated you to open your own business?
Answer: I’ve been in this industry since 2011. I worked for one of the largest document shredding companies in the world, and I made the decision to start Direct Shred in August of 2017. I began Direct Shred to provide secure, on-site document shredding at an affordable price for everyone in my community. The biggest motivation to me was the fact that I knew I could provide a premium on-site document shredding service to my community with a higher level of customer service than any one that was doing it at the time.
Question: What are some of the services you offer your customers?
Answer: We offer file purges – this service is one in which a business would have bulk shredding of stored documents that were ready for destruction – and recurring service – this service is one in which the business is provided as many secure, locking containers as needed, and then set up on a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or bimonthly schedule.
Direct Shred is also the only shredding company that provides on-site, residential shredding in this area. We also offer drop off service by appointment, available for people who may only have a box or two.
Question: You’re based in Jackson, but do you travel outside the City and County? If so, what is your territory, and how often do you call on your customers?
Answer: Our mobile shredding units travel from the Mississippi River on the west to the Tennessee River on the east, and to the north and south state lines. In all of the cities contained in that area we provide at least monthly service. In the larger cities contained in that area we offer weekly service.
Question: Would you describe the process Direct Shred goes through when shredding documents?
Answer: Direct Shred sends a uniformed shredding expert to each job. That person will securely collect the material to be destroyed in one of our locking containers and transport it to the mobile shred unit. The material is then dumped all at once into the shred compartment of the unit and is destroyed by the shredder. Each customer is then given a signed Certificate of Destruction stating that the material has been destroyed on-site.
Question: What happens to the documents after they have been destroyed?
Answer: After the documents have been destroyed they are transported to a recycling facility where they are baled and recycled. For every ton of documents we destroy, we save 17 standing trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil, and three cubic yards of landfill space.
