New robotic knee replacement surgery more accurate and has better results
People suffering from joint pain in their knees are benefiting from a new robotics-assisted, knee replacement surgery that provides greater accuracy during surgery, less pain and improved recovery.
West TN Bone & Joint Clinic – new robotic replacement surgery – more accurate, better results
West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic, P.C. physicians in Jackson are using the NAVIO Surgical System at the Physicians Surgery Center and Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
“With any total knee arthroplasty surgery, final placement of the implant is critical to providing both the function and longevity that today’s patients expect,” said Dr. Jason Hutchison a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon at West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic, P.C. “With the NAVIO system I’m able to see real-time data throughout the surgery that is designed to help place each implant in the optimal location based on each patient’s unique anatomy.”
Unlike other robotics-assisted platforms, the NAVIO system does not require a pre-operative CT-scan. Instead, the surgeon collects patient-specific data during the procedure to build a 3D model of the patient’s knee. This is used to plan the surgery. To perform the procedure, a handheld robotics-assisted tool (the NAVIO handpiece) is used to position NAVIO-specific cut guides exactly as intended, based on the patient-specific data previously collected. This extra layer of precision and accuracy is designed to enable optimal implant placement for better patient outcomes.
West Tennessee Bone and Joint Clinic physicians in Jackson began using the NAVIO robotics-assisted surgery for both total and partial knee replacement in July. When they did so, the Physicians Surgery Center became the first free-standing, physician-owned ambulatory surgery center in Tennessee to offer robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery.
Many patients can get relief from knee pain with partial knee replacement surgery, said Dr. Hutchison. “They don’t have to wait in pain until they are a candidate for full knee replacement.”
Dr. Hutchison will give a seminar about the NAVIO Surgical System at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at 219 Stonebridge Blvd., West Tennessee Bone & Joint’s Stonebridge location. The public is invited.
The Oct. 4 seminar is free, but space is limited. People can reserve a place at the seminar online at www.wtbjc.com.
West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic, P.C. is the largest and most comprehensive orthopedic practice group between Memphis and Nashville with the mission of “Keeping You Active.” The practice’s board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians specialize in diagnosing and treating hand, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and foot conditions; sports medicine; trauma; and interventional pain management.
