At 25 years old, Jonathan Cardwell could be viewed as a veteran at Chick-fil-A.
The Memphis native, he and wife Lauren are two of Jackson’s newest residents, and they become the new owner/operators of the Chick-fil-A in the Old Hickory Mall.
“I started working in Memphis while I was in school,” Jonathan said. “I continued to work for Chick-fil-A in Oxford, when I went to Ole Miss, but I never started out thinking I would own a Chick-fil-A restaurant.”
Talking to Jonathan, you can see how he moved up the ranks with the popular restaurant chain.
“I have a passion for the brand and a passion for the service,” Jonathan said. “The brand offered me the opportunity to grow and develop in leadership. I received exposure to the brand, which helps you develop yourself as a leader.”

Checkers Drive-Thru Restaurant opening on Carriage House Drive
The restaurant under construction at 620 Carriage House Drive, is not the only business venture for Riad Razeq and Ziyad Qaadan in Jackson.
But it is the first Checkers Drive-In Restaurant for the twosome, who also own five convenience stores in the City.
“We are the Checkers franchisee in Jackson,” Riad said. “We are building our first Checkers Drive-Thru restaurant in Jackson. (It is) known for good quality food … at a very affordable cost.”
A few of the menu items include hamburgers, fries, hot dogs, chicken, fish, wings, ice cream and soft drinks for the restaurant, which is one of the largest chains of double drive-thru restaurants in the United States.
Hoyt Hayes Construction is building the 1,000-square-foot facility located between Logan’s Roadhouse and O’Charley’s Restaurant & Bar.
“Checkers, for so many years, has proven their brand, and is dedicated to be the place where a franchisee and employees who work hard can create opportunities for themselves, their family and their community,” Riad said. “Jackson, Tennessee will celebrate the opening of our first Checkers Drive-Thru restaurant sometime in May, here at Carriage House Drive.”
Riad said he and Ziyad are looking at locations for a second Checkers Drive-Thru Restaurant for Jackson.

Ordinance to amend District Liquor Store map for City of Jackson fails
The consideration of an ordinance to amend the Official Liquor Store District Map for the City of Jackson, failed by a 5-2 vote – with one abstaining – when the Jackson City Council held its monthly meeting at City Hall, Tuesday.
“This will probably be the last conversation the council has on liquor districts,” said Jerry Gist, mayor of Jackson, “It’s come up once before, and this is the second time the council voted to retain the districts as they are, with no changes.”
Council members who voted against amending the district – established in 1972 – were Ernest Brooks II, David Cisco, Vicky Foote, Harvey Buchanan and Charles Rahm.
Those who voted ‘Yes’ were Pepper Bray and Johnny Dodd, with Randy Wallace abstaining.
Councilman Ross Priddy was unable to attend the City Council meeting.
“It has to be a year before discussion, probably longer, so they will stay as they are now.”
The City has two liquor stores in each of the six Jackson districts, but Alan Sallee, who owns Hollywood Liquors at 801 Hollywood Drive, believes the district map is antiquated.
“The population and dynamics have changed since 1972,” Sallee said. “I was looking for an open market, just like any industry in our town. They serve liquor and beer in restaurants, but they don’t set restrictions where (restaurants) can go.”
Sallee, who told the City Council he is losing about $75,000 each year, said he has has owned Hollywood Liquors for about 12 years, and during that time he has seen a change in the neighborhood.
He also added he was looking at property in the Columns on Vann Drive.
“There has been a rapid decline in the population,” Sallee said. “There is no new commercial real estate being developed.”
