‘America … a land of opportunity,’ Gary & Marilyn Deaton celebrating 50 years in floor covering business
It’s a business story that will floor you.
The success Gary Deaton enjoys didn’t happen overnight, but 50 years later Deaton’s Carpet One easily defines a true America spirit.
“Jesus came into my life, and I was saved in 1972, and I credit all my success to the Lord,” Deaton said, “Out of that I found a real purpose for living … I live by faith every day. He gave me this opportunity.
“America has never been a nation of guarantees … it’s always been a land of opportunity.”
Deaton opened Deaton’s Rug Barn in the fall of 1974 after investing basically all the money he and wife Marilyn had – $425 – to purchase 21 remnants of carpet and one roll of damaged carpet.
Perhaps Gary’s toughest sale he ever made was to convince Marilyn of a very ambitious idea.
“When I told my wife, she asked ‘How are we going to feed our kids, make our house payment, and two car payments?’” Gary said, “I told her we were going to sell the carpet I bought – we were going to make a living doing this.” FOR COMPLETE STORY CLICK HERE
Leaders from throughout West Tennessee travel to Michigan to thank Ford Motor Company
Local elected officials and state economic leaders recently participated in the inaugural “West Tennessee Ford Fly-In” to Detroit/Dearborn.
Southwest Tennessee Development District Executive Director Joe Barker planned the fly-in as an opportunity to thank Ford Motor Company’s leadership for the decision to locate a new EV manufacturing plant in West Tennessee and for the 6,000+ high quality jobs the project will create for citizens in the region.
Marianne Dunavant, BlueOval Community Relations Manager, worked closely with officials in Michigan and at SWTDD to coordinate meetings and tours at Ford’s Dearborn campus. A primary focus for the trip was to bring together local elected officials and Ford management for in depth discussions.
Fly-In attendees spent two full days (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) in Michigan. While there, participants toured the Ford Truck Plant at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, where the F-150 Lighting Truck is manufactured; explored the Ford Museum; and attended numerous meetings with upper management regarding the BlueOval City project.
