Jackson Energy Authority Board of Directors approve 6 resolutions during monthly meeting
The Jackson Energy Authority’s board of directors reviewed – and approved – six items of business during their monthly meeting at the Tennergy Center, Thursday.
Training on pension and employee benefits was discussed by Jeremy Hall of R.W. Baird.
“Jackson Energy Authority’s board met today to discuss several items of business related to system purchases and improvements along with some operational procedures,” Monte Jones said, “All items were approved.”
Monte Jones is the chairman of the Board of Directors at Jackson Energy Authority.
“The board also received training on pension and other employee benefits from its consultant,” Monte said, “Additionally, the board welcomed a new senior staff member Lara Coleman who will fill the Electric Division senior vice president role along with Hameen Harris in his new role as Vice President of Engineering.
“Both staff members have tenures with JEA and will be strong members of the management team.”
The Board of Directors –
- Authorized the purchase of 34 galvanized steel transmission poles – Stuart C. Irby, Jackson, submitted a low bid $211,800
- Approved the purchase of 16,500 feet of 954 AL overhead conductor – Graybar submitted a $75,491.96. There were two lower bids, but Graybar was accepted due to lead times – 20 weeks, compared to 76 weeks and 42-44 weeks
- Authorized a contract for the South Fork Wastewater Interceptor Rehab Project – Kajacs Contractors, Inc., Poplar Bluff, Mo., submitted the low bid of $4,275,136.50
- Designated Jackson Energy Authority’s authorized representative to AND director of the Tennergy Corporations
- Approved a resolution affirming JEA’s Identify Theft Prevention Policy and included procedures to comply with revisions of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act
- Authorized banking services.
Unemployment rates for West Tennessee counties
Every county in Tennessee recorded unemployment rates below 5% in September, according to the latest data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD). September also marked the second consecutive month that rates decreased in each of the state’s 95 counties.
Chester County had the lowest rate in West Tennessee CLICK HERE at 2.6%, down 0.3%, while Madison County saw its rate fall 0.6%, to 3.0%.
Lake County had the next highest rate at 4.7%, which was 0.6 of a percentage point lower than its August rate.
Eye Clinic welcomes new Optometrist; opens second clinic in Thomsen Farms
The Eye Clinic welcomes a new optometrist as it opens a second location in north Jackson.
According to a press release from Mary Reed – Reed: A Marketing Company – Eye Clinic North, 1340 Union University Drive in Thomsen Farms will offer comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages and a full-service optical shop.
The Eye Clinic, with its main location at 668 Skyline Drive, was founded by more than 50 years ago.
After 18 years of practicing optometry at his own clinic in Jackson, Corey Persons, O.D., has joined the Eye Clinic and will be practicing at the new north location. His specialties include primary eye care, dry eye, glaucoma management, specialty contact lenses and surgical co-management.
Dr. Persons received his medical degree from the University of California. He then completed a residency with extensive training in ocular disease and pathology and surgical co-management. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology at San Diego State University.
Optometrist Adam Phelps, who has had a practice in Henderson, joined the Eye Clinic earlier this year. His clinical specialties are macular degeneration, dry eye, glaucoma, emergency care, hard-to-fit contact lenses, and surgical co-management. After graduating from Freed-Hardeman University, Dr. Phelps completed his doctorate degree at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis.
In September, Ophthalmologist Rutvi Nord started seeing patients at the Eye Clinic. Dr. Nord received her medical degree from University of Tennessee Health Science Center and completed her residency at the Hamilton Eye Institute, both in Memphis. Her clinical specialties are cataract surgery, macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
The three newcomers join ophthalmologists Dr. Neel, Dr. Jason Sullivan, Dr. Hilary Grissom, and Dr. Stephen Hammond Jr.; and optometrists Dr. Molly Lee and Dr. James Smith.
The Eye Clinic is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at both Jackson locations. It also has clinics in Selmer and Henderson. For an appointment, call 731.424.2414.
USJ Holiday Mart scheduled for Civic Center, Nov. 18-20
The University School of Jackson’s annual Holiday Mart is just around the corner!
This multi-day Merchandise Mart features gifts, clothing and accessories, holiday and home decorative items. It is the school’s largest fundraiser.
Traditionally held the weekend before Thanksgiving, Holiday Mart attracts approximately 10,000 people to the Carl Perkins Civic Center to shop, enjoy a variety of foods, and get in the holiday spirit.
The 2022 Holiday Mart will open with a Preview Party on Thursday, November 17, 2022, and will feature a special Sip n’ Shop event Friday evening between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Construction continues on WOW WASH on West University Parkway
An opening date has not been announced, but construction continues on a new car wash – WOW WASH – which will be located at the 101 block of West University Parkway, near Kroger.
The facility will consist of 5,054 square feet and is being constructed on approximately 1.22 acres.
WOW WASH will offer four parking spaces and 20 vacuum stalls.
