Highlights from the June 2022 Labor Force Estimates:

  • The Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment Rate for Tennessee remained the same at 3.3% from May to June.
  • During the same time period, the Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment Rate for the United States remained the same at 3.6%.
  • The unemployment rate increased in all 95 counties.
  • Williamson County had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.8 percent.
  • Perry County had the highest unemployment rate at 6.8 percent.

Jackson Energy Authority Board of Directors approve 8 resolutions

The Jackson Energy Authority Board of Directors approved nine resolutions during their monthly meeting at the Tennergy Center, Thursday.

Board members approved –

A miscellaneous electric contract with Service Electric Company, which submitted the lowest bid of $651,395.

The purchase of ITRON Encoder Receiver Transmitters for the Gas Division, for a cost of $542,800. The lowest bid was submitted by United Systems & Software of Benton, Kentucky.

The Water Division rate schedules to be effective October 1, 2022.

A wholesale water rate adjustment and adopting amended rate schedule with County-Wide Utility Division to be effective October 1, 2022.

A wholesale water adjustment and adopting amended rate schedule with Lexington Utilities to be effective October 1, 2022.

The renewal of Technical Support Agreement with the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga.

The appointment of two new members – Julia Lester and Alex Taylor – to the Employee Health & Welfare Benefits Committee.

The appointment of two new members – Braxton Williams and Jeremy Harwell – to the Retirement Plan Administrative Committee.

Business Spotlight – Dr. Jay Phipps named president, Tennessee Pharmacists Association

Nashville, Tennessee – The Tennessee Pharmacists Association (TPA), the only professional association representing pharmacists in all practice areas across the state, today announced Dr. Jay Phipps, owner of four community pharmacy locations in McKenzie, Jackson, Huntingdon, and Waverly, Tennessee, as the organization’s 2022-2023 president.

According to a press release from Stephanie Traylor – Marketing & Research Strategist Younger Associates – Phipps has an extensive pharmacy background and more than 20 years experience in the profession.

He earned his doctorate of pharmacy and completed a residency in drug information and pharmacotherapy at the University of Tennessee. Immediately after, Phipps opened City Drug Company in McKenzie, as the managing partner and became its sole owner two years later.

As TPA president, Phipps will help to provide a connection between leadership, members and society, and lead the TPA Board of Directors to achieve the strategic plan for the organization as it works to provide pharmacists and other members the tools to improve pharmacy practices that serve Tennessee communities.

Construction on new mixed use facility nears completion on Pleasant Plains Extension

Tenants for the new facility have not been announced, but construction on a new 9,600-square-foot mixed use complex at 2100 Pleasant Plains Extension is expected to be completed by mid-August.

MG Construction Company is the lead contractor for the facility located next to Foundation Bank.

West Tennessee Healthcare – Amisha Patel, Andria Russow named employees of the month for July

Amisha Patel and Andria Russow have been named the West Tennessee Healthcare employees of the month for July.

Teresa Freeman, vice president and chief nursing officer at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and Damon Mays, executive director West Tennessee Healthcare Regional Transfer Center, presented the award.

It is not for certain, but it is believed it is the first time two people have been presented the award in the same month.

Amisha has been with the organization for 12 years. She thinks about her patients and the care she gives them. Without being asked, Amisha will recognize opportunities and lend a hand to help out.

Andria Russow has been with the organization for over nine years. She is always willing to help others and just jumps right in to help! She has assisted with moving and transferring patients off of floors.

Beaming with pride – final pieces falling into place for Jackson Clinic/Baptist Memorial

A partnership that developed between the Jackson Clinic and Baptist Memorial Health Care to build and operate a new outpatient center in Madison County was topped off when the final beam was put into place at 145 & 155 Innovation Drive, Tuesday.

Baptist was selected to partner with the Jackson Clinic because they shared the same vision for developing high quality outpatient health services across West Tennessee.

“Topping out is a great symbol for this project,” said Dr. William Preston, president of The Jackson Clinic, “Today we are placing the highest steel structure for this building. This project also represents the Jackson Clinic and Baptist Memorial Health Care working together to offer the highest level of care for people and the community of this region.”

Surgeries and procedures to be performed at the center include gastrointestinal, ophthalmologic, gynecological, general, plastic, urologic, pediatric as well as ear, nose and throat. Diagnostic heart catheterizations will also be performed at the center.

The new outpatient center will give patients more choices, lower patient costs and shorten wait times for surgical procedures. It will provide greater access for patients in surrounding communities. It will also create new jobs and generate additional revenue for the city and county.

Leaders Foundation awarding $20,000 to area educators – L.E.A.D.S Educator Grants

JACKSON, Tennessee – Leaders Education Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c) (3), will award $20,000 to West Tennessee educators through the L.E.A.D.S. Educator Grant program.

According to a press release from Mary Helen English – Leaders Credit Union marketing & public relations specialist – this program awards twenty $1,000 grants to area educators whose initiatives empower students to Learn, Experience, Advocate, Dream, and Serve.

“The L.E.A.D.S. Educator Grant embodies who we are as an organization. We are here to support lifelong learners and allow them to dream of a new future,” said Leigh Anne Bentley, president of Leaders Education Foundation, “We hope to help make lives better by championing the initiative of inspiring educators.”

L.E.A.D.S. Educator Grant submissions are now open to any educator or school-based professional.
