Jackson Energy Authority Board of Directors approve 7 resolutions during monthly meeting

Jackson Energy Authority’s board of directors introduced a new member, Bill Kipp, and approved seven resolutions during their monthly meeting at the Tennergy Center, Thursday.

Bill Kipp, a human resources manager, worked 40 years at Gerdau Long Steel North America, 801 Ameristeel Road, prior to his retirement in October, 2018.

The resolutions –

Approved the purchase of 4,500 feet of 750 MCM copper underground conductor. Border States Electric of Jackson submitted the low bid of $184,860.

Approved the purchase of distribution transformers.

Authorized the purchase of one new aerial truck for the Electric Division. The Board approved the purchase of the 40-foot aerial device mounted on a 2022 Ford F-550 2WD from Altec Industries for $132,919.

Approved the purchase of remote disconnect meters and communication modules.

Authorized a contract for the purchase of weathered steel transmission poles from Stuart C. Irby, Jackson, for the low bid of $187,275.

Authorized the purchase of one new all-terrain mini tree trimmer for the Electric Division from Progress Rail of Albertville, Alabama for the low bid of $187,825.

Authorized the purchase of ductile iron pipe for a water main extension to serve McLock Secure Storage development. American Ductile Iron Pipe, Birmingham, Ala., submitted the low bid of $50,475.

Georgia Pacific Consumer Operations purchases 241 acres from City of Jackson for $8 million plus

Georgia Pacific Consumer Operations LLC has executed a purchase agreement on approximately 241 acres off Highway 223 with the City of Jackson for $8,780,200.

When the all debts are satisfied, the City of Jackson will realize a net profit of about $250,000- to $300,000 and possess 100 acres of land adjacent to the property sold.

The site, which is served by a railroad line, is located off Highway 223 in Jackson, near Airport Industrial Park.

It had been selected to join the Select Tennessee Certified Sites program, which has helped communities prepare industrial sites for private investment and job creation since 2012, according to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

Sites in the program are used to attract businesses to the state. Companies have invested nearly $2 billion in projects located on certified sites, which accounts for over 7,700 job commitments, according to the Tennessee Economic and Community Development.

1 million square foot facility under development on Gerdau Road following $20 million land purchase

Following a $20,983,920 purchase of property at 565 Gerdau Drive (Ameristeel Road), Simon & Schuster is expanding its shipping and receiving operations from 400,000 square feet to one-million square feet.

Bridge Investment Group purchased the property from Josh LeFevre, who is developing the 143 acre industrial site.

Simon & Schuster is an American publishing company and a subsidiary of Paramount Global.

It was founded in New York City on January 2, 1924 by Richard L. Simon and M. Lincoln Schuster.

As of 2016, Simon & Schuster was the third largest publisher in the United States, publishing 2,000 titles annually under 35 different imprints.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the end of the fourth quarter.

West Tennessee Healthcare – Tammy Faulkner named employee of the month

Tammy Faulkner, who has been employed at West Tennessee Healthcare for over 23 years, was named West Tennessee Healthcare’s employee of the month for April.

Tammy – patient & family education/TNA coordinator – was presented the award when the Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, Tuesday.

Teresa Freeman, vice president/CNO Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, and Ginger Keymon, director, Nurse Education, presented the award.

According to Amy Garner – West Tennessee Healthcare system vice president chief compliance & communications officer – many of her co-workers describe her as what every employee should strive to be.

She jumps right in to help when she sees a need.
She’s a positive influence and stays calm, no matter what is going on.
She has the best sense of humor and is a joy to work with.
One employee said that no one deserves to be an employee of the month more than Tammy.
She is absolutely wonderful, thank you so much for what you do!

Business Spotlight – Dr. Jennifer Graves named president of The STAR Center

The STAR Center board is excited to announce Dr. Jennifer Graves as President of The STAR Center effective June 1, 2022.

According to a press release from Cassidy (Sheppard) Spencer – vice president of Development, Marketing & Events – Graves previously served as the founding Director of the Union University EDGE Program, which provides a post-secondary education for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

She also served as an adjunct instructor; teaching courses on inclusionary practices for individuals with disabilities and learning in a diverse classroom.

“I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to lead The STAR Center,” said Graves. “The focus of my entire career has been to provide education and training to individuals with disabilities, encouraging increased skills and independence that lead to a better quality of life.

“This aligns perfectly with The STAR Center’s mission ‘to help any person with any disability to realize their potential.’”

Graves received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science from Union University, minoring in Special Education and Secondary Education.

She completed a Master of Science Degree in Counseling and Personnel Services; and a Doctor of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration in Special Education, from the University of Memphis.

The mission of The STAR Center is to help any person with any disability realize their potential.

Founded in 1988, The STAR Center is dedicated to provide services for education, employment, and independence for individuals with disabilities across the state of Tennessee.
