If you have wondered why teddy bears are perched atop mail boxes or positioned on front porches, it’s all part of what is described as a ‘unique scavenger hunt.’
The Teddy Bear Hunt was created to give families an outdoor activity while practicing social distancing – and the event has more than taken hold in Jackson – most noticeably at the intersection of Bells Highway and Old Bells Road.
“It’s just one of those bizarre things that I ended up with years ago,” Donna Frankland said, “I had folded it up and stuck in a closet.”
The wheels started turning after Donna’s mother wanted to get in on the fun.
“My mom was worried that she didn’t have a teddy bear to put in her window, and she talked about printing one off to be able to do so.
“That reminded me of this crazy thing I hadk and I wanted people to get the connection between this big grizzly and the bear hunt – thus the name Teddy.”
Donna could ‘bearly’ contain her enthusiam and used her ‘bear’ hands to get busy with the ‘bear’ necessities.
“I had a blast doing ‘the installation,'” Donna said, “It’s a fairly busy intersection, and people were honking and giving the thumbs up sign, and we’ve seen several cars pull over.”
She and husband Bob, have Theodore, err Teddy, positioned next to a tree stump that took on the appearance of a makeshift home several years ago.
“The Folly, as we call the tree stump, has always been a draw to young children, and parents are always thanking Bob and I for it, telling the stories they tell their children about the fairies or trolls that live there.
“Moms seem to always say fairies live there, dads seem to prefer the thought that – it’s a troll!”
