(October 22, 2013) Jackson TN – The Jackson Madison County School Board (JMCS) approved a new Central Office position, Scheduled a Board retreat, discussed the Joint Education Committee, and heard committee reports from facilities and finance.

The board members will be considering whether to continue with a maintenance agreement or take over the service internally. Officials said internal staff is very qualified to take over service and the system would realize added savings by reducing service contract fees.
Building and Operations director Stan Parker gave the board a facilities report. Among items he highlighted that will need attention soon are bleachers and stadiums at Northside and Southside, aging temporary buildings at Pope and Nova, and several buildings with aging roofs. Additionally, Parker told the board in 2015-16 the county would need to replace about $1.7 million in aging school buses.

Chairman Jim Campbell told other board members the reports were very important blocks to preparing for future budget requests.

Dr Verna Ruffin followed up last months approval of a new Central office positon of Chief Academic Officer with a request for a Chief Budget Officer. Here is how Dr Ruffin explained it to the board

The board approved the request. Truman Murray asked that the Policy Committee look into changing policy that requires the Superintendent to seek board approval for hiring certain positions.
The board scheduled a retreat for November 15-16. The agenda includes the Superintendent's 100 day report and Strategic Planning sessions.
The next meeting is the board work session scheduled for November 11, 6:00 PM
