leadership for 2016-17: Miranda Beard of Mississippi’s Laurel School District, President; Kevin Ciak of New Jersey’s Sayreville School District, President-elect; and Frank C. Pugh of California’s Santa Rosa City School District, Secretary-Treasurer. NSBA’s 2015-16 President, John Tuttle of Oklahoma’s Kellyville Public Schools, will now serve as Immediate Past-President.

Jackson Madison County School Board member, Bob Alvey, was elected for a new term. Alvey represents the southern region of the United States and is the only member from Tennessee. Alvey said, “Proud of our new President Miranda Beard, who has family connections to Jackson Tennessee. Honored to have been re-elected to the NSBA Board for another three year term and elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the Board.” The theme for this board is “Greater Recognition of Public Education as the New Frontier.”

NSBA’s 150 school board member Delegate Assembly held elections during NSBA’s Annual Conference, April 8-11, in Boston, Massachusetts. Before a crowd of more than 6,000 conference attendees, Beard, in her inaugural speech, thanked her family and public school education for contributing to the person she is today. Speaking of the power of high expectations, Beard urged school board members and public school leaders to “expect greatness from every child and from each other,” reminding them that, “the children in our schools are counting on us.”

“Miranda Beard is passionate and committed to advancing educational opportunities for students,” said Gentzel. “As NSBA’s president she will be an effective advocate for public education.”

Beard was elected to serve as a member of NSBA’s Board of Directors in April 2011, and was re-elected in 2012 for a three-year term. Beard has served as an NSBA Director representing the Southern Region, as NSBA’s Secretary-Treasury in 2014 and as president-elect in 2015. She is the president of the Laurel School District Board of Trustees and past-president of the Mississippi School Boards Association.

NSBA’s 2016-17 board members include:

From the Southern Region:

Robert F. Alvey, Jr., Jackson, Tennessee

Beth Branham, West Columbia, South Carolina

Viola Garcia, Houston, Texas
