Jackson Mayor Scott Conger, appearing on The Afternoon Show with Keith Sherley – NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM – responded to misdemeanor shoplifting charges against his wife Jessica “Nikki” Conger, at Walmart, 2196 Emporium Drive, Sunday.

Conger 30, has been accused of failing to scan or ring up 28 items totaling $84.77.

Mayor Conger said the merchandise consisted of items their children placed in the shopping cart.

“It’s part of our process when we go shopping … anyone with two kids knows, they grab stuff and put them in the buggy,” Scott Conger said, “Right, wrong or indifferent – our process has been – we buy what we are going to buy, get out of the way, go through the buggy, and all the items that our kids have put in that we don’t want … we take the bags, or items and put the items back, or talk to the clerk about putting the items back.”

Conger said Walmart did not give his wife the opportunity, Sunday.

“Even during the process of her doing the self check-out, she called the clerk over there several times to help her,” Conger said, “She went straight to the desk to talk to the clerk, and was escorted into a room for several hours … long enough for our daughter to use the restroom on herself, miss a nap and lunch.

“It’s unfortunate there is an such aggressive overreach by a big box store on its customers.”

Jessica ‘Nikki’ Conger must report to the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex for booking and processing in early August.

“She has until Aug. 2 to follow the process … It’s unfortunate, frustrating and anger all at the same time.”
