Mayor Conger proposes tax, city vehicle sticker increase

From Jackson Mayor Scott Conger –

As Mayor, I have always believed in leading with transparency, responsibility, and a clear vision for Jackson’s future. I am proposing two key changes to support the continued growth and improvement of our city: an adjustment to the property tax rate from $1.6114 to $1.85 and an increase in the city vehicle sticker fee to $50.

These proposals are not made lightly, but this is more than a tax conversation. It is a vision for the future of Jackson.

We have done the hard work of tightening our belt. This year, we reduced the city’s total operating budget by 1 percent compared to last year. We have cut costs while still delivering core services. But operations alone will not move Jackson forward. It is our capital investments, our streets, sidewalks, public safety equipment, and quality of life infrastructure, that need funding. That is exactly what this modest tax adjustment makes possible.

Even with the proposed change, the property tax rate will still remain the lowest it has been in 40 years. That is a testament to our fiscal discipline and a reminder that this adjustment is about responsibly investing in Jackson’s future, not bloating government.

By adjusting the property tax rate from $1.6114 to $1.85, we are not just increasing revenue, we are investing in transformation. This increase, which is about $10 to $12 more per month for the average household, positions us to create a Jackson that is safer, more connected, and more competitive.

Imagine this:
·        Over the next three years, 465 city streets will be paved. That is more than have been resurfaced in the last two decades combined! That means smoother commutes, safer intersections, and renewed pride in every neighborhood.
·        Our first responders will be fully staffed and better equipped, giving us faster emergency response times and a stronger sense of safety for families.
·        New sidewalks and crosswalks will connect our schools, parks, and neighborhoods, especially in areas long neglected.
·        We will invest in public spaces that build community, from youth programs to senior centers to upgraded parks and recreation that serve every generation.
·        We will have local funding needed to unlock millions in matching state and federal dollars, unlocking those resources that have been left on the table too long.

This is not just about what we need today. It is about the Jackson we want to become. A Jackson where our kids can grow up safely, where small businesses thrive, and a place where people are not from, but a place they move to.

We can’t pave 465 streets with yesterday’s budget. We can’t grow tomorrow with yesterday’s mindset. But with a bold vision and the courage to act, we can build a Jackson that works for everyone.

We can invest in the Jackson we believe in, we can build the Jackson we deserve.

We can’t grow a city where there are shootings every day in most any part of our city. Invest in making and then keeping our city safe then we can talk about growth.
