Mark Alquist named 2018 ‘Deputy of the Year’ by Exchange Club

Mark Alquist, an officer with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, is relatively new to the job, but his response to an emergency call regarding a drug overdose led to his selection as the Exchange Club’s “Deputy of the Year,” award.

The presentation was made at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Tuesday.

Deputy Alquist, who joined the Sheriff’s Department, January 2017, recognized the medication as Hydrocodone and made a call for EMS.

The ambulance was 10 minutes away, and the individual was unresponsive.

Deputy Alquist relied on his training and administered Narcan, and within a few minutes, the individual regained consciousness and was able to speak.

Upon arrival, EMS transported the Individual to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital for further treatment.

The EMS personnel who handled the transport, later advised that if Deputy Alquist had not administered the Narcan, it is possible the individual would have died.

EMS shared that they typically have to work on the patient during transport, but due to the response of Deputy Alquist, the patient was stable during the transport, February 28.
