Madison County can expect $2.7 million from Governor’s local government support grants

JACKSON, Tenn.—Covid-19 financial support from Tennessee’s government includes $200 million for Tennessee’s local governments including every town and county in West Tennessee.

Haywood County governments will receive nearly $1 million. Madison County governments can expect just over $2.7 million. The money is disbursed based on population, according to earlier state news releases. “Distressed” counties were awarded additional funding.

The grants are to be used for one-time funding for one-time expense, according to a document circulated to mayors by the state’s office of finance and administration.   It can’t be used to “support recurring expense such as salaries, debt or existing programming or services.” It can’t be used for construction of new buildings. It can be used on multiple projects, and local governments are not required to match the grants.

With restrictions, permitted categories for spending include IT hardware upgrades, capital maintenance, utility system upgrades, road projects, public safety and Covid-19 response.

At a Haywood County Budget Committee session conducted Monday evening, Haywood County Mayor David Livingston told members of the committee to begin thinking about the money’s use.

The document states that the money must be spent by June 2023 and the cash will be available by July 1, 2020.
