Jackson, Tennessee – The man who played a major role in helping to change the political landscape in Madison County for decades, has formally announced his candidacy for Madison County Mayor. John Newman will seek the Republican nomination for mayor in the Republican primary to be held on May 3, 2022.
A Jackson native, Newman currently serves as Madison County Trustee, a post he has held for the past 11 years. Prior to his current role, Newman served on the Madison County Commission for 20 years including serving as Chairman of the Finance Committee.
“This is my home, I’ve raised my family here, I love this county and I’m ready for the incredible opportunity to make a difference in people’s life’s,” Newman said. “From my experience as County Commissioner and County Trustee, I understand the intricate apparatus of how county government operates, that the mayor is the top ambassador for the county, and how trusted leadership is essential in this role. If folks are looking for a leader who will always put the county first, I’m your man.”
Newman has held other leadership roles including West Tennessee Field Representative for United States Senator Fred Thompson, Chief of Staff for the Tennessee Republican Party, and played a significant role in electing a majority of Republicans to the Madison County Commission. Newman’s strategic planning and keen political awareness have helped elect office holders across the state.
Newman received his Bachelor of Science degree from Union University in Organizational Leadership and his Associate of Science degree from Jackson State Community College where he studied pre-law. He is also a graduate of the University of Tennessee Institute of Public Service. Prior to his service as County Trustee, Newman was Vice President of FirstBank of Jackson and Owner and Operator of C&L Meat Company and BBQ.
John served as a member of the Republican State Executive Committee, Chairman of the Madison County Republican Party, and named Statesman of the Year in 1999 by the State Republican Party. John is involved in numerous philanthropic organizations and is a member of the NRA.
John and his wife Kandy have six children, seven grandchildren, and are members of Skyline Church of Christ in Jackson.
